At over 1,700m, with intense UV and dramatic summer hailstorms, Johannesburg pools need builders who understand the site and the climate, not just a standard design dropped into your garden. Trademen Pools builds swimming pools for homes and businesses across the northern suburbs, the south, the east, Roodepoort, Soweto and the rest of Johannesburg. We assess each pool on site — ground, slope, access and sun exposure — and quote honestly from there.
As pool builders we handle every shape and finish, matching the pool to your site, budget and the look you’re after.
Because we work across Johannesburg regularly — the full spread of Joburg pools, from heritage homes to new builds — we know what these pools need and quote accordingly.

Our design-and-build process
Every pool starts as a consultation and ends as a working, commissioned pool — but in between there’s a fixed sequence of construction steps that determines how strong and how long-lasting the finished pool will be. This is the order we follow on every build:
- Consult on your needs, site and budget, and prepare a design
- Provide a fixed written quote and timeline
- Mark out and square the site, then excavate — by hand and TLB where access allows
- Install steel reinforcement — Y8 steel bars and 100mm mesh wire, tied into a ring beam
- Pour the concrete shell — 30 MPa ready-mix concrete from a reputable supplier, poured to 150mm thickness
- While the concrete is still setting, position the weir, aim-flow and LED light
- Let the concrete cure for three to five days
- Fit bull-nose copings — normally 450x450mm flagstone — and lay paving, also 450x450mm, forming a 900mm apron around the pool
- For marbelite pools, install ceramic mosaic tiles along with 50mm PVC piping for suction and return
- Install the “Box” combo unit — pump, sand filter, electrical distribution board with a battery-backed timer, and pump house
- Connect the smaller fittings — weir, aim-flow and LED light — and run the wiring back to the board
- Apply your chosen finish — marbelite, left to cure overnight, or for fibreglass, plaster left to dry completely before resin and gelcoat are applied and cured
- Fill the pool with water and commission it — balancing chemistry and checking every system before handover
A pool is a long-term investment in your property, so it pays to build it right — sound engineering, quality materials and a finish matched to how you’ll actually use it.
Why site assessment matters in Johannesburg
Ground conditions, slope and access change from suburb to suburb across Johannesburg, and each of those affects how excavation is done, how long the shell takes to cure properly, and what a fair price looks like. A steep stand or tight access can mean more hand excavation and less TLB work, which changes both timeline and cost. Assessing this upfront, before any ground is broken, is what keeps the fixed quote and timeline accurate from day one.
Pricing & how long it takes
Every build is quoted on its design, size, finish and site. You get a clear, fixed written quote and timeline before any ground is broken. Either way, you get a clear, fair price for the work in Johannesburg — no surprises.
Swimming Pool Builders FAQs — Johannesburg
How long does it take to build a pool?
Most new pool builds take two to three weeks from breaking ground to handover. It can run a little more or less depending on size, finish and especially the weather.
Can you build on a sloped or difficult site?
Yes — we plan access and engineering around the site, including slopes and tight stands. This is exactly why the site assessment happens before the quote is finalised.
Do you handle approvals and safety compliance?
We build to the relevant standards and advise on safety and any approvals your pool needs, including pool barrier and gate requirements where they apply.
Can you build any shape of pool?
Within engineering limits, yes — from simple rectangles to free-form and feature pools.
Should I choose marbelite or fibreglass?
Both are proven finishes and we install and repair both, so the right one comes down to your budget, how you’ll use the pool, and the look you want. We’ll talk you through the difference on site rather than push one over the other.
Do you handle everything in-house?
